A Chadron State College student, Heath Draney of Omaha, edged his father, Bruce, for first place at the 23rd annual Chadron State Open Chess Tournament on Saturday.

Heath said he learned the game from his father, starting in the first grade. They played to a virtual deadlock with Heath winning on a tiebreaker. He was a state champion as a senior at Skutt Catholic High School in 2001-02.

He placed sixth in the CSC Tournament as a freshman in 2003 and was fourth last year. Third place went to Loren Pospisil of Bayard, who has played in 18 of the tournaments and won first four times. Aaron Prohs of Scottsbluff was fourth, followed by Dr. Ron Miller, the tourney organizer, and Jon Carlson of Scottsbluff.
