CSC senior chosen for National Intercollegiate Band
Chadron State College senior Malinda Sprentall has been selected to participate in the National Intercollegiate Band July 26-31 at the University of Kentucky.
Sprentall’s selection was based on a tape she submitted of her clarinet performance and the recommendations of Bill and Carola Winkle, members of the CSC music faculty.
Sprentall is majoring in music performance and mathematics at CSC. She is a 2002 graduate of Chadron High School, and is the daughter of Bob and Gail Sprentall, now of Douglas, Wyo. She is believed to be just the second Chadron State student selected for the national band. The first was Shawn Oakes, who graduated from CSC in 2002.
This year, three Nebraskans will play in the select band. The others are Alex Wimmer of the University of Nebraska at Omaha and Mackenzie Cochran of the University of Nebraska at Kearney.
The band will be composed of 70 musicians from the United States and Canada.
Once in Kentucky, the band members will practice for a day and a half before giving the opening concert at the national convention of two music honorary societies, Kappa Kappa Psi and Tau Beta Sigma.
Michael Haithcock, University of Michigan music professor, will conduct the band, which will perform contemporary pieces written by internationally acclaimed composer Philip Sparke, a native of London.
“I’m really excited,” said Sprentall, “I’m looking forward to a fun experience.”
