CSC professor to head state range group

Dr. Chuck Butterfield, associate professor of agriculture at Chadron State College, is the new president of the Nebraska Section of the Society for Range Management. The election took place earlier this month during the society’s annual meeting in Valentine.
While he was a student at the University of Wyoming, Butterfield was president of the Student Conclave of the International Society of Range Management and has served as a sponsor of the conclave in recent years. He has missed just one international meeting since joining the society in 1979.
He also has filled most of the offices on the Range Science Education Council that is a part of SRM.
The focus of this year’s state meeting was on strategies that may help a family retain ownership of its ranching operation. Among the speakers was Brad Beguin, a CSC student from Rushville who participated in a ranch mentoring program this past summer.
Butterfield said about 60 percent of the approximately 70 range management majors at Chadron State plan to go into ranching, most often in conjunction with family members.
Next year’s annual meeting will be in North Platte, Butterfield said.
