A sophomore at Chadron State College, Ericka Smith of Ainsworth, was elected vice president of the student section of the National American Pre-Veterinary Medical Association at the organization’s recent convention at Iowa State University.

Smith said she has several goals as she assumes her new duties. They include increasing the membership and attracting sponsors to help support the national organization, which stretches from coast-to-coast and into two Caribbean nations.

“Several schools with pre-veterinary programs are not members of the national organization, but they should be,” said Smith “I’m going to contact them and encourage them to join. I mainly just want to increase the awareness of what we’re all about.”

Smith added that she will be the liaison between the national association and Michigan State University, which will host next year’s convention. Chadron State was the convention host in 2004. That marked the first time an institution that does not have a veterinary school had served as the convention host.

During last year’s convention, Dr. Georgia Younglove, a CSC agriculture professor and sponsor of the CSC Pre-Vet Club, was elected the junior advisor for the national organization. She moved up to senior advisor at this year’s convention.

Two of the other new student officers are from Iowa State. They are Kate Dion, president, and Amanda Eason, secretary. The new treasurer is Seth Colman of the University of Florida.

Ericka is the daughter of Kristi Frew of Ainsworth and Kyle Smith of Minden.
