CSC math professor honored for innovation
Dr. Monty Fickel, Chadron State College Mathematics Department chairman and professor, has received the Award for Innovative Excellence in Teaching, Learning and Technology. It was presented during the 16th International Conference on College Teaching and Learning at Jacksonville, Fla., on March 29-April 2.
Fickel was one of about 200 presenters at the conference. He spoke about how Internet instruction encourages reflective teaching.
Fickel, who received the Distinguished Service Award from the Nebraska Association of Teachers of Mathematics in 1993, became a pioneer of Chadron State’s online offerings by securing funds for a server and offering a course over the Internet in 1997. Under his direction, Chadron State’s math program has become available entirely online.
The Center for the Advancement of Teaching and Learning, with headquarters at Jacksonville, sponsors the annual conference to emphasize the use of innovative strategies, such as interactive and cooperative learning, combined with the use of technology to support higher education learning. About 900 faculty representing the major academic fields attend from colleges and universities throughout the world.
“People came from all over for this conference,” Fickel said. “It was a really diverse group and I met a lot of outstanding educators.”
Fickel was one of just 56 people to receive the award this year. Recipients came from throughout the United States and as far away as Hong Kong, Guam and the United Kingdom.
