A Crawford High School and Chadron State College graduate, Cynthia Parish Sabah, was inducted into the CSC Music Hall of Fame on Sunday during the college’s spring choral concert.

Sabah has taught music in the Kearney Public Schools since 1980. Twice she has received one of the Kearney Schools’ Outstanding Educator of the Year Awards. Her students consistently have been accepted into state, regional and national honor choirs.

The recipient graduated from Crawford High in 1968 and from CSC in 1972. As a senior at Chadron State, she received the Band Alumni Award as the outstanding senior band member and was crowned the Ivy Day queen. That summer, she was the musical director at the Post Playhouse at Fort Robinson.

Sabah taught two years at Arcadia, four years at Paxton and two years at Sumner-Eddyville-Miller before going to Kearney. When she arrived at Paxton, the band had just six members and there were only eight in the high school choir. When she left, the band had 40 members and there were 85 in the chorus.

Sabah taught elementary music 22 years in Kearney before moving to Horizon Middle School three years ago. She has hosted Sing Around Nebraska several times and has been the regional representative for an elementary music educator group organized by the Nebraska Choral Directors.

She has directed several musicals at the Kearney Community Theatre and performed for 15 years with a professional group, “The Company.” She has directed choirs at the First Lutheran Church in Kearney 23 years.

She has three children—Bill, Kate and Kassie. All have been active in music with both girls planning to become music educators.

Her late father, Frank Parish, was superintendent of schools in Crawford for five years during the 1960s. Her mother, Linnea, lives in North Platte.
