The speaker during winter commencement exercises at Chadron State College Friday evening, Dr. Pat Colgate, spoke on hope and how important it is to becoming successful.

Colgate said that even when people have nothing else, they can have hope. He noted that even the smallest nibble will keep a fisherman hoping all day that he will snag a big one.

He said hope is made up of heart, or “the part of your personality that makes you…what you are;” opportunity; perseverance and persistence; and effort.

A member of the CSC faculty and administrative team for 37 years before retiring three years ago, Colgate told the 182 graduates that by being prepared and ready to meet the challenges they will encounter they can turn crises into creative opportunities, defeats into successes and frustrations into fulfillment Colgate also said there are no short cuts to being successful and that anything worth achieving is worth an honest effort.

Seize the opportunities when you are given the chances, he advised.
