CSC choir members planning New York trip

Approximately 15 members of the Chadron State College concert choir are planning to sing in Carnegie Hall in New York on May 28, 2006.

The choir director, Dr. Joel Schreuder, said he received the invitation to bring the choir members to New York last February while he was attending the National American Choral Directors Convention in Los Angeles. The invitation was extended by Jonathan Griffith, who will be the conductor.

The Chadron State singers will join at least 125 other college and university choir members from throughout North America for the concert. “Mozart’s Mass in C minor,” will be performed. The New England Symphonic Ensemble will accompany the choir.

While on the trip, the Chadron State musicians will attend a concert at the New York Philharmonic.

Schreuder called the trip a “once in a lifetime” experience for the CSC students. He noted that while he was a member of a choir that sang in Japan and China in the early 1990s and was the assistant conductor of a 50-voice choir from Washington State University that visited Germany in 1995, he expects the opportunity to sing at Carnegie Hall to be the highlight of his career.

The group will leave Chadron on May 25 and spend three days in New York rehearsing prior to the concert. Some sightseeing, including an excursion on the New York harbor, are planned.

Schreuder said individuals or couples from the region are welcome to join the CSC contingent on the trip. Tickets to both the Carnegie Hall and New York Philharmonic concerts will be assured those who wish to participate. The cost is expected to be between $1,300 and $1,500 per person.

Several fund-raising activities are planned to help the CSC choral members defray a portion of their cost.

One is the production of a cookbook that will be available for distribution in early 2006. Recipes may be submitted to Schreuder by the U.S. mail or e-mail at jschreuder@csc.edu.
