Four couples who are associated with Chadron State College have established scholarships through the Chadron State Foundation that will assist students attending the college. Three of the scholarships will assist education majors while the fourth is to help a student wishing to participate in the college’s Study Abroad program that is being launched.

A brief description of the scholarships follows:

--The Tom and Lee Detwiler Student Teaching Education Scholarship will be awarded to a senior who is student teaching. Dr. Detwiler was director of student teaching at CSC from 1971 until his retirement in 1994, and saw the added expense that seniors encounter during their final semester. “It’s their most expensive semester,” Detwiler said. “Our goal is to help a senior so he or she won’t have to work while they are student teaching or go further into debt just before they graduate.”

--The Willis B. Furman Endowment has been established by Bob and Joyce Hardy in memory of Furman who was a rancher in the Marsland area until heart problems forced him to sell the ranch and became what has been described as “a phenomenal history teacher” at Alliance High School. Bob Hardy was among the students whom Furman encouraged to set high goals and then showed him how to achieve them. Furman and his wife also “became like parents” to Hardy while he was in high school and to both of the Hardys after they were married. Like the Detwiler scholarship, the Furman Endowment will be awarded to a senior who is student teaching. Dr. Joyce Hardy teaches science at CSC after serving as vice president of academic and student affairs at the college the past seven years.

--The Hester-Squier Family Scholarship was established by Chuck and Cindy Squier, members of the special education faculty at CSC. It will be awarded to a CSC student seeking a teaching endorsement in special education. The Hesters are Cindy’s parents and were long-time educators in Lincoln. Chelys Hester taught physical education at Nebraska Wesleyan University and Max Hester was a teacher and coach at Northeast High School in Lincoln. Max has been inducted into the Nebraska Football Hall of Fame.

--Steve and Jan Taylor are establishing a scholarship that will be awarded to a student who is selected to study abroad for a semester under a program being developed at CSC. Steve Taylor, who is assistant vice president for extended campus programs at the college, said studying abroad can greatly enhance the college experience. “There will be additional costs in studying abroad. We hope the scholarship will give a student the incentive to consider participating,” said Taylor. “Studying aboard can open doors and show students how the rest of the world works.”
