Concert to include American favorites
An array of music that is high on the list of American favorites, including hits from several of the most popular musicals, will be presented at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 29 when the Chadron Community Chorus and Bordeaux Community Band join for their spring concert. The concert will be in the Student Center at Chadron State College.
The chorus director, Dr. Roger MacNeill, said the audience should particularly enjoy a challenging, but “fun arrangement” of Camptown Races” and “Magazine Madrigals,” which were written to be humorous.
Flutist Stefanie Duron will be featured on “Rise Up, My Love,” a selection about lovers in the spring. Accompanist Melinda Fillmore has been assisted by Gwanetha Neff in rehearsals.
The award-winning Bordeaux Community Band, directed by Carola Winkle, will begin its half of the program with Richard Goldman’s “The Foundation March.”
Other numbers will include “Danse Celestiale” by Robert Sheldon, and “Affirmation and Credo” by Claude T. Smith. Both Sheldon and Smith are contemporary American composers.
Also to be presented is “Folk Song Suite” by Ralph Vaughan Williams. Written in 1923, the piece has three short movements. It was Williams’ first composition and is based on English country dances.
Carola Winkle recently received a Citation of Excellence Award from the National Band Association for her work with the Bordeaux Community Band, which she founded 11 years ago. The award was presented at the annual convention of Nebraska State Bandmasters Association convention in Lincoln on March 4.
The band has maintained the membership of approximately 40 and has become a northwest Nebraska icon.
The two groups will close the concert as they combine by presenting a medley of tunes from Richard Rodgers musicals entitled “Richard Rodgers in Concert.”
Tickets obtained in advance through the Memorial Hall box office will be $5 for adults and $3 for youths and senior citizens. The telephone number is 6360. All tickets at the door will be $6.
