Community music group to organize soon

The Bordeaux Community Band and the Chadron Community Chorus are gearing up for their performances in 2005 and ’06. The organizational meeting and first rehearsal for the band will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 30 in the band room of Memorial Hall at Chadron State College. The chorus will assemble for the first time this fall at 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 1 in the chorus room of Memorial Hall.

This will be the 12th season for the Bordeaux Community Band. Carola Winkle, who is the founder of the band and the director again this season, said the fall concert will be Tuesday, Nov. 8 in the CSC Student Center. As has been its tradition, the band will perform an assortment of marches, overtures, suites and other standard pieces those music lovers enjoy.

A limited number of instruments are available for rent by those who wish to participate in the band but do not possess an instrument.

The chorus director, Dr. Roger MacNeill, said this will be an exciting time for his group. The Chadron group will join the Rapid City Children’s Chorus to present a recent composition, John Rutter’s “Mass of the Children,” in both Rapid City and Chadron in December.

The local concert will be Dec. 10 in the Chadron Arts Center, which is known for its fine acoustics.

Since the Chadron Chorus does not have outside support, members will need to purchase the music, which is $7.50 per copy.

Although he has officially retired from the faculty at Chadron State, MacNeill will direct the chorus again this fall. In January, he will pass the baton to Una Taylor, a new CSC music faculty member who is completing work on her doctorate this fall.

The Chadron-based groups will combine for their spring concert on March 28.

One hour of credit from CSC is available by participating in each of the groups.
