A recital by Chadron State College faculty members Dr. William Winkle on the tuba and Carola Winkle on the clarinet will be at 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 30 in the Chicoine Atrium of the Mari Sandoz High Plains Heritage Center on campus. No admission will be charged.

The recital will open with Rachmaninoff’s “Vocalise” featuring both performers as they are accompanied by Jim Margetts, a new piano professor at CSC.

The tuba literature to be performed also will include Rodger Vaughan’s “Concertpiece No. 1” and “Valse Bluette” by Richard Drigo. Vaughan is a close friend of Dr. Winkle’s and for the past six years, he has contributed to a CSC music scholarship fund for tuba majors. The Drigo work is arranged by Patrick Sheridan, who is a long-time tuba student of Dr. Winkle’s at the International Music Camp. Sheridan is now a tuba soloist of international renown. Margetts will provide accompaniment on both numbers.

Dr. Winkle also will join Dr. Sandy Schaefer in presenting William Penn’s “Capriccio for Tuba and Marimba,” which was published in 1998.

Carola Winkle’s portion of the recital will include Jules Mazellier’s “Fantaisie Ballet,” which is a Paris Conservatory virtuostic work. The program also will include “Tonada,” written by Argentine Carlos Guastavino, and “Cueca,” which features syncopation and “a flavor of the country,” in Winkle’s words. Margetts will be the accompanist on both numbers.

Carola and Dr. Schaefer also will play Libby Larson’s 2001 composition, “Corker.” Larson has written works for nearly every type and size of musical group. She received a 1994 Grammy for the CD, “The Art of Arlene Auger.”
