Students teach Kenwood kids about 'the great outdoors'
Students enrolled in a Chadron State College course gave children from Chadron’s Kenwood Elementary School a jump start on summer fun this week.
About 10 college students and 20 children from Mark Rutter’s fourth-grade class gathered at the Thompson Nature Preserve on the west end of the Chadron State campus Tuesday. They spent the morning playing outdoor games and receiving tips on how to assemble a tent, catch a fish, shoot a bow and arrow, paddle a canoe, tie knots and pitch horseshoes.
“Both the elementary and the college students benefit from this project,” said Tom Andersen, instructor of the Camp Counseling course and CSC’s head women’s basketball coach. “Our students gained hands-on experience working with children, and hopefully the children learned some valuable outdoor skills. We also had a lot of fun.”
The two-credit-hour course, which is designed to teach students about camping and how to lead an elementary camping group, is part of the Health, Physical Education and Recreation curriculum at CSC.
The temperature had reached 70 degrees by mid-morning, making ideal weather conditions for the activity. The event concluded with grilled frankfurters for all the students in nearby Wilson Park.
