Student project provides skills, computers to job-seekers
Chadron State College business students in February began a new project to help Chadron job-seekers gain skills to improve their chances of employment. The project also provided each participant with a valuable tool for job hunting – a computer.
The Chadron State College Students in Free Enterprise team composed a three-day series of workshops that was attended by 15 people enrolled at Nebraska Workforce Development. At the end of the project, each of the job-seekers were given a refurbished computer.
The workshop skills included proper dress for an interview, the importance of first impressions, Internet resources for job hunting, resume and job application pointers, basic computer skills and tips on saving money. At the conclusion of the workshops, students were given a formal job interview. Those conducting the interviews were George Ledbetter, Chadron Record publisher; Deena Kennel, CSC director of Internships and Career Services; and Kara Vogt, CSC director of Human Resources.
Rick Koza, SIFE advisor, said one of the the project’s goals was to provide community outreach where the group saw a need. Each of the participants was looking for a new job or hoping to find a better one. Just two of them were CSC students.
The computers were purchased at the State of Nebraska’s surplus auction in Lincoln and refurbished by SIFE members and Jereme Patterson, CSC telecommunications service specialist. Funds for software were obtained by a grant from Microsoft Corp. The rest of the project’s cost was funded with money raised during SIFE fund-raisers.
