Scholastic Contest is Friday

Published:

More than 1,800 students from 59 high schools are entered in the 44th annual Inter-High School Scholastic Contest at Chadron State College on Friday, April 2.

The contest is believed to be the oldest and largest in the High Plains Region that includes testing over nearly every aspect of the curriculum. Forty-eight tests will be offered. Students may take up to three tests.

Plaques will be awarded to the schools scoring the most points in each of the contest’s five divisions. Medals will be awarded to the top three individuals in each test. Seniors who place first in a test are the recipients of a scholastic achievement award that covers the in-state portion of the tuition at Chadron State for the 2004-05 school year.

The testing will begin at 8:30 a.m. and continue until about 12:30 p.m. Several activities are planned for students when they are not taking tests. They include horse-drawn wagon rides, planetarium shows, karaoke, a trivia contest, a pool tournament, sand volleyball and basketball outdoors.

In addition, the Mari Sandoz High Plains Heritage Center and the Eleanor Barbour-Cook Geology Museum in the Science and Math Building will be open. Campus tours also will be available.

After not participating in the contest the past three years, Stevens High School of Rapid City will return. Colby High School of Kansas will send seven students to this year’s contest, meaning that schools from five states will be represented.

Teacher Interview Day also will be on campus Friday. It will be in the Nelson Physical Activity Center from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. More than 30 schools will have representatives in attendance to interview current teachers and those nearing the completion of their training to teach and are in the job market.
