Rapid City couple collides in chess finals
Terry Likens of Rapid City won the CSC Open Chess Tournament for the fourth time in a row and the sixth time overall this spring. His wife, Jill Way Likens, was the runner-up this year.
The tournament coordinator, Dr. Ron Miller, said Jill nearly defeated her husband. She had more pieces remaining near the end the championship game, but Terry found a perpetual check, forging a stalemate. He was declared the champion because of the records of his opponents compared to those of Jill’s opponents.
The Likenses love chess. Their license plates are SDCHESS.
Third went to Jonathon Carlson of Scottsbluff, fourth to CSC student Heath Draney of Omaha, fifth to Jim Joule of Alliance and sixth to Zowie Kelly of Rapid City. Draney was sixth a year ago.
This was the 22nd year for the tournament.
