North Platte Canteen is program topic

The second Phi-Alpha-Theta History Fraternity program of the 2004-05 school year at Chadron State College will be on the famous North Platte Canteen.

The program will be at 12:10 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 3 in the Student Center. It will be open to the public without charge.

The speaker will be Ben Harvey. He has been the executive director of the Masonic Eastern Star Home for Children in Fremont the past 24 years.

Harvey said he became interested in World War II history while he was a junior high student in Kearney. The North Platte Canteen was one of the closest physical properties that involved the war, so he has gathered all the history about it that is possible.

He said the canteen was located in the Union Pacific Railroad depot in North Platte. During the course of the war, an estimated six million troops were provided warm food and other niceties by volunteers from the North Platte community.
