'No Place Like Home' art exhibit to open in Chadron
Chadron State College will be the first host in 2004-05 for the Sheldon Memorial Art Gallery’s statewide traveling exhibition, “No Place Like Home.” The show will open Tuesday, Sept. 14 in the Main Gallery of Memorial Hall. A reception will take place the following day from 4 to 6 p.m.
“No Place Like Home” explores the concepts of home through contemporary artwork from the Sheldon Art Gallery’s permanent collections. About 25 works are included in the display, which will remain at CSC through Oct. 10.
It includes urban and rural housing, and the roles of men and women in those settings. Other images, such as transitional housing, hotel rooms and the inner dwellings of the homeless are evidence of nearly everyone’s attempt to achieve a semblance of home life.
By exploring both worlds, the works in the exhibition acknowledge the qualities of home and the desire for a sense of home. In addition, they compel viewers to examine their definition of the two.
The exhibit’s coordinator, Sharon Kennedy-Gustafson, said, “My hope is that the artwork will encourage visitors to think about home beyond its four walls and a roof. What does having a home imply? Also, what does it mean not to have a home? Perhaps this exhibit will allow visitors to reminisce about childhood homes, dream of the perfect home or simply be grateful for the hole in the wall we call our own,”
In its 18th year, the exhibit is an outreach of the Sheldon Memorial Art Gallery and the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Its mission is to serve Nebraska communities by sharing the museum’s outstanding collection of American art. Since its inception in 1987, the program has been seen by approximately 260,000 people in 24 communities.
The exhibit also will be shown in North Platte, McCook, Fremont, Aurora and Columbus in the next six months.
The Sheldon Gallery is named in honor of Addison E. Sheldon, pioneer newspaper publisher in Chadron. He later was director of the Nebraska State Historical Society.
