Author Carole Nelson Douglas told a crowd at Chadron State College on Tuesday afternoon that one of the reasons she began writing mystery novels is that ”not many women had written them.”

Nelson Douglas spoke Tuesday at Chadron State as part of the Panhandle Library System’s Author Tour.

Nelson Douglas said she has tried to make women protagonists in her novels. She is the author of more than 35 books, ranging from mainstream novels, historical romance, fantasy, science fiction and mystery.

Her work includes a popular mystery series about fictional character Irene Adler, described as the first woman to ever out-fox Sherlock Holmes.

Formerly a newspaper reporter and editor in St. Paul, Minn., Nelson Douglas lives with her husband, artist Sam Douglas, in Fort Worth, Texas.

The many animals the couple has rescued have provided inspiration for another of her popular series, the Midnight Louie Mysteries. Those books feature narration by a “hard-boiled, hairy-chested 19-pound black tomcat detective who prowls the mean streets of Las Vegas.”
