Chadron State College is asking its employees and students to help celebrate the return of the remaining 21 members of Chadron’s Nebraska Army National Guard unit, the 1057th Light/Medium Truck Company. The group was reported leaving Sidney at 1:15 p.m. today.

Like Monday, people are again expected to line the streets with signs and flags when the soldiers make their swing through the city upon arrival. The soldiers are expected to follow the same parade route as the first group did Monday to reach the Nebraska National Guard Armory on 12th Street.

The 21 members who are arriving today stayed at Camp Ashland this week to close down operations. They made headlines when they surprised Gov. Mike Johanns at an awards ceremony at the Nebraska National Guard Armory in Lincoln.

About 20 of the 132 soldiers from the 1057th were enrolled at Chadron State when the unit was deployed January 2003 for duty in Iraq.

The 1057th, based in Chadron, was the first Nebraska unit called up for the Iraq war. Members spent three months at Fort Carson, Colo., before going overseas in April 2003. The unit uses various tractor-trailer trucks to transport “non-containerized” cargo and military personnel.

There will also be a community celebration honoring the soldiers Sunday.
