Literature course has regional interest

A special topics distance learning course at Chadron State College in June will feature content with regional interest. The senior-level course, Literature of the American West, will meet in Chadron, Scottsbluff, Alliance and Sidney. It will be Mondays and Wednesdays, 3 p.m. to 5:50 p.m. beginning June 7 and ending July 2.

Through classroom and online instruction, students will analyze a variety of texts written by, inspired by, and focused on the people and places of the American West. CSC Assistant Professor Dr. Matt Evertson, the course’s instructor, said special emphasis will be placed on “western voices, visions and experiences” nearest to the Nebraska Panhandle and its surrounding region.

The tentative reading list includes “Hostiles and Friendlies,” by Mari Sandoz, “Ranch Life and the Hunting Trail” by Theodore Roosevelt, “Plainsong” by Kent Haruf, “Winter in the Blood” by James Welch and “The Portable Western Reader,” a compilation edited by William Kittredge.

More information may be obtained by contacting Evertson at 308-432-6465 or mevertson@csc.edu.
