Governor appoints Krepel to rural development post
Dr. Tom Krepel, president of Chadron State College has been appointed to the Nebraska Rural Development Commission by Gov. Mike Johanns.
Dr. Krepel has served as president of Chadron StateCollege since November 1998. Previously, he served as interim president and senior vice president for academic and student affairs.
"Demographic and economic data indicate that many of our rural communities are facing an uncertain future," said Dr. Krepel. "A Nebraska united requires that we ensure all areas of the state have opportunities for community and economic development that help retain our young people and build a sustainable future. I hope to contribute to that discussion through my service on the Nebraska Rural Development Commission."
The Nebraska RDC is a voice for rural Nebraska communities in the creation of laws, policies, and other initiatives that affect economic, civic, and social conditions and foster cooperation and understanding among all agencies and organizations, public and private.
"We are pleased to have Dr. Krepel working with us in addressing the future sustainability of Nebraska's rural communities," said Lisa Dominisse, Nebraska RDC director. "Dr Krepel's education and experience will help the Commission further explore all issues and aspects involved in planning for future economic and community growth and development."
Born in Crete, Neb., Dr. Krepel grew up in Lincoln, graduating from Lincoln High School. He received bachelor’s, master’s and doctorate degrees from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.
From 1986-1990, he worked in several capacities at UNL, including assistant to the chancellor, director of university relations, and as a member of the graduate faculty. He also was on the staff of the Nebraska Legislature for several years while completing graduate work at UNL.
He began his career in education as a junior high social studies teacher at Bellevue, Neb. He also served as an assistant professor in the Department of Educational Leadership and Foundations at the University of New Orleans in Louisiana, and associate professor and member of the graduate faculty at St. Cloud State University in St. Cloud, Minn.
For five years before coming to Chadron State College, Dr. Krepel served as dean of University Outreach at Texas A&M University- Corpus Christi in Texas.
Dr. Krepel and his wife, Carol, a native of Kearney, have 19-year-old twins, Philip and Patrick.
