Four South Dakota schools, Lodgepole win Scholastic Contest

Published:

Four South Dakota schools and a Nebraska school that is in its final year of operation were the class winners at the 44th annual Chadron State College High School Scholastic Contest on Friday.

Rapid City Stevens, Hot Springs, St. Thomas More of Rapid City and Rapid City Christian earned the plaques that are awarded to the schools scoring the most points in Classes I through IV, respectively.

Stevens, which has not entered the scholastic contest the past three years, but had won nine straight Class I championships prior to that, scored the most “quality” points of the 60 schools that were entered this year. Stevens had 16.03714 points while cross-town rival Rapid City Central was next with 13.29825 points.

Although Hot Springs has entered the contest many times, this was the first time it has won a class championship. It edged O’Neill, which won the Class II title seven consecutive years from 1966 through 2002, and last year’s Class II champion, Sidney.

St. Thomas More won the Class III title for the ninth time in the last 10 years. Yuma, Colo., interrupted the Rapid City school’s string of victories in 2002, when a Yuma student, Eric Lubbers, now a sophomore at Chadron State, won the gold medal in three tests, all that a student is allowed to take. West Holt High of Atkinson, Neb., was a close second to St. Thomas More this year.

Rapid City Christian, which also won the Class IV title last year, edged Niobrara County High of Lusk, Wyo., for its team trophy this year.

Lodgepole won the Class V title for just the second time in the contest’s history. Its other championship was in 1994. Lodgepole is consolidating with Chappell beginning next fall. The new school will be known as Creek Valley High. Chambers was a close second in Class V this year.

A senior at Sturgis High School, Chris Meyer, won three medals Friday. He was first in World Geography, second in American Government and third in American History. Two more South Dakota students won two gold medals. Sophomore Josh Swanson of Rapid City Central was first in both Advanced Mathematics and Computer Science and junior Isaac Christiansen of Hot Springs was first in Algebra II and Plane Geometry.

Others winning two medals were:

William Baker, O’Neill, second in both Chemistry and Trigonometry; Matthew Schmitz, O'Neill, first in Literature and second in American History; Amanda Olson, Stuart, first in Nutrition and Family Health and second in Algebra I; Dan Schweitzer, Hot Springs, second in Literature and third in Vocabulary; Mandy Grantz, Rapid City Stevens, first in Psychology and second in Spanish as a Second Language; Johnna Grant, Glenrock, Wyo., second in General Biology and third in Health; and Jessica Morton, Colby, Kan., second in World Geography and third in Sociology.
