Seven teams are scheduled to participate in the Chadron State College High Mileage Challenge electric car race Saturday (May 1). The event will begin at 11 a.m. on the north side of Chadron State’s Administration Building.

In addition to Chadron State’s team, students from Alliance, Beatrice, Chappell, Garden County, Scottsbluff and O’Neill high schools plan to participate.

The High Mileage Challenge is one in a series of Power Drive competitions throughout the state sponsored by the Nebraska Public Power District and the Omaha Public Power District. The Power Drive program gives students hands-on experience building a safe, energy-efficient electric vehicle.

The event will begin with competitions in braking and maneuverability. The endurance race will follow at 1 p.m.

Trophies sponsored by NPPD and OPPD will be awarded for the top three places in each category.

Kevin Miller, CSC assistant professor of applied sciences, said that in addition to Chadron State and NPPD, numerous volunteers have donated time and materials to the race.

The event is open to the public free of charge.
