A Chadron State College music professor recently proved that he has fast hands. Dr. Sandy Schaefer placed third in the “Battle of the Hands” at a contest for drum players in Nashville, Tenn., in late July.

The electronic “drumometer” used to count the beats showed that Schaefer managed 1,007 strokes in a minute. Schaefer, who heads the jazz performance and music business programs at Chadron State, said he has been practicing for the competition for about a year, but thinks he has the potential to be faster.

The contest was during the National Association of Music Merchants convention. At least 50 drummers from around the nation tried out. First place went to Sam LeCompte of Thibodaux, La, who had 1,061 strokes in 60 seconds. Second was Brad Broomfield with 1,057 stokes.

Schaefer said he’ll probably give a demonstration of his fast hands during a jazz concert at CSC this year and hopes to enter the competition again next year. The first-place winner receives a set of drums and several other pieces of nice equipment, Schaefer said.
