Three jazz groups will present a concert at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, April 15 in the auditorium at Western Nebraska Community College in Scottsbluff. The concert will be open to the public without charge.

The CSC Vocal Jazz Ensemble consists of eight singers and a three-piece combo. It is directed by Dr. Joel Schreuder, who studied vocal jazz under Phil Mattson of Spokane, Wash., a nationally-known jazz conductor, pianist, arranger and composer. Last fall, this group performed for the Nebraska Music Educators Convention. Selections they will sing include “Route 66,” “How High the Moon,” “Acappella in Acapulco” and “Fly Me to the Moon.”

The CSC Jazz Ensemble will be playing “Count Bubba,” “Cute,” a samba version of “Won’t You Be My Neighbor,” “Blue Note” and “I Got Rhythm,” featuring CSC senior Alex Smith on the trombone.

The Jazz Birds have a new vocalist, Mandy Carlson of Hay Springs. They will perform several jazz favorites and well-known pop standards such as Al Green’s “Let’s Stay Together,” “(Love is Like a) Heatwave” and James Brown’s “I Got You.” Carlson also will sing “Spain” and “Round Midnight.”

Both the Jazz Ensemble and the Jazz Birds are directed by Dr. Sandy Schaefer, director of the Chadron State music program and head of the CSC music business program that is affiliated with the National Association of Music Merchants.

Schaefer may be contacted at 308-432-6378 or at sschaefer@csc.edu.
