CSC concert charts international journey

The Chadron State College wind ensemble directed by Dr. William Winkle will take its listeners on an international journey while presenting a fall concert at 3 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 14 in Memorial Hall.

 Several small groups also are on the program and two student conductors will be featured.

The concert will open with “Russlan” and “Ludmilla” by the Russian composer Mikhail Glinka from his overture to the opera.

Another highlight will be “Fairest of the Fair” by John Philip Sousa on the 150th anniversary of his birth. CSC senior Warren Eagle of Tuscoloosa, Ala., will direct the famous march.

The second student conductor is senior Michael Fulton of Norfolk, who will direct the melodies from the “Fantasy On a Welsh Song” by Robert Foster.

The wind ensemble also will perform” Songs of the Basque” and “A Longford Legend,” based on three Irish poems. CSC Board of Trustees Professor of History Dr. Samuel Rankin, who is of Irish heritage, will give an interpretive reading of the poems.

In addition, the international journey will include “Cajun Folk Songs” and “Repercussion,” which features the percussion section, brass and woodwind sections.

The concert also will include “Presto” featuring the flute trio, “Finale” by the clarinet quartet and “Afro-Amero” by the percussion ensemble. The woodwind groups are directed by Carola Winkle and the percussion ensemble by Dr. Sandy Schaefer.

Admission to the concert will be $5 for adults and $3 for senior citizens and youths 18 and under if the tickets are obtained in advance through the Memorial Hall Box Office. All tickets at the door will be $6.
