CSC changes student classification

It will take a little more coursework for freshmen at Chadron State College to become sophomores beginning this fall. Entering freshmen at Chadron State will be encouraged to make progress toward their degree at a more consistent pace.

Chadron State has approved a plan that will require 30 credit hours instead of 26 for students to become sophomores. The change will put CSC in line with Peru State and Wayne State, the other Nebraska State Colleges.

Students at Chadron State will still be required to complete 125 total credit hours for a bachelor’s degree – 30 credits in each of the first three years to advance class rank and 35 in the fourth. Students with 30 to 59 completed hours will be classified as sophomores, students with 60-89 completed hours will be classified as juniors, and students who complete 90 or more hours will be classified as seniors.

Dean of Students Dr. Rex Cogdill said the new system will emphasize the college’s focus on academic success. He said the change will increase the likelihood that students graduate in four years and will ease academic advising.

A standard course load for students is 16 hours per semester. However, some students may find find it more difficult to obtain enough hours during the fall and spring semesters to become a sophomore, Cogdill said. Those students will be encouraged to reach the requirement by taking summer courses.

The change will affect only new students this fall. Current students will be allowed to use the former classification system until they graduate.
