CSC alumnus wins teaching award

A Dawes County native and Chadron State College graduate, Sharla Tollman Dowding, is the recipient of the Outstanding Biology Teacher Award for Wyoming for 2004. She received the honor at the recent National Association of Biology Teachers Convention in Chicago.

In addition to a certificate, Dowding was presented a pair of binoculars by Prentice Hall, a microscope from Leica Microsystems, Inc., and a video flex camera system from Ken-A-Vision.

The daughter of Buzz and Rosalene Tollman of Marsland and married to Rod Dowding, who grew up in Crawford, Sharla has taught biology and chemistry at Newcastle (Wyo.) High School since 1997. Prior to that, she taught science at Rushville.

Criteria for the award she received include teaching ability, experience, inventiveness, initiative, inherent teaching strengths and cooperativeness in the school and community.

Dowding received the Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching in 2000. She was president of the Wyoming Science Teachers Association 2002-04.

Dowding earned bachelor's and master's degrees from Chadron State in 1991 and 1995, respectively.

In addition, she has written four publications about effective teaching strategies.
