Concert to feature Glenn Miller, Old West songs

An assortment of well-known music will be presented by the Bordeaux Community Band and Chadron Community Chorus during their spring concert at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 13 in Memorial Hall at Chadron State College.

Included on the band’s program is a medley of tunes made popular by the Glenn Miller Band while the chorus will be singing an array of songs from the Old West.

The Bordeaux Band is directed by Carola Winkle. The chorus is directed by Dr. Roger MacNeill.

Also on the program will be the induction of two Chadron State graduates into the college’s Music Hall of Fame. They are Dan Long, a native of Mullen who was a nationally-recognized orchestra leader in Michigan, and Jim Rosenquist, a native of Shickley who has won several teacher of the year honors while directing the middle school band in Palmdale, Calif.

The Bordeaux Band, which is completing its10th season, is directed by Carola Winkle. It will open the concert by playing a Sousa march, followed by “Heroes of Flight,” which commemorates the 100th anniversary of the Wright Brothers flight at Kitty Hawk.

Also on the program will be a tuba solo, “Variations for Tuba and Winds (The Cobbler’s Beach),” played by Dr. William Winkle, who is in his 33rd year as director of bands at CSC and is a Yamaha performing artist.

“In the Miller Mood” is a collection of selections made famous by Glenn Miller, whose distinct big band sound was immensely popular in the early 1940s. He died in 1944 at age 40. The numbers include “In the Mood,” “Moonlight Serenade,” “I’ve Got a Gal in Kalamazoo,” “Serenade in Blue” and “Little Brown Jug.’

Concluding the band’s portion of the concert will be Henry Fillmore’s march, “Americans We.”

Some of the tunes to be sung by the community chorus include “Cool Water,” “Whoopee Ti Yi Yo,” “Wait for the Wagon,” “They Call the Wind Maria,” “Ghost Riders in the Sky” and “Don’t Fence Me In.”

Several soloists are on the program. They include Tim Bosak, who will sing “Fox on the Run” and “In My Sweet Baby’s Arms.” Dick Stein, Russ Harford and Larry Nye have solos on “The Old Chisholm Trail.”

He concert will include a couple of special features. “Home on the Range,” sung by the popular Bald Mountain Rounders, a bluegrass quartet based in Chadron, and Crawford native John Lemmon will be singing several county and western ballads, including “The Cowboy,” a hit for Garth Brooks, and “The Auctioneer,” LeRoy Van Dyke’s trademark song.

If obtained in advance, tickets for the concert will be $5 for adults and $3 for youths 18 and under and senior citizens. The Memorial Hall box office will be open from 2 to 5 p.m. the day of the concert. All tickets at the door will be $6.
