Commencement, Ivy Day this week

Chadron State College’s commencement exercises will be Saturday, May 8. There are 34 candidates for graduate degrees with that program beginning at 8:30 a.m. in Memorial Hall. There are 248 candidates for bachelor degrees with the program starting at 10 a.m. in the Armstrong Building.

For safety and comfort reasons, seating in the Armstrong will be limited and on a first-come, first-served basis. Others can view the ceremonies on a large projection screen in the nearby Student Center.

Speaking at the 8:30 program will be Jim Jacobs, a 1969 graduate of Chadron State who became an executive with The Associates, an international financial services firm. Last year, Jacobs was the first to participate in CSC’s executive in residence program. Now a resident of Montgomery, Texas., he was presented CSC’s Distinguished Alumni Award in 2003.

The speaker at the baccalaureate graduation will be the Rev. James Krotz, a 1970 graduate of Chadron State and bishop of the Nebraska Episcopal Church from 1989 until his retirement late last summer. He was the first Nebraska native to head the Episcopalian Church in the state and also was the youngest person ever elected to the position.

Now living on a ranch near his hometown of Rushville, Rev Krotz received the college’s Distinguished Service Award in 1992.

Also on tap this weekend will be Ivy Day, where the college’s outstanding scholars will be recognized. The program will begin at 7 p.m. Friday in Memorial Hall with the crowning of the Ivy Day royalty.

The queen candidates are seniors Alyssa Derry, Chappell; Echo Fredrickson, Hay Springs; Sarah Krysl, Stuart; Angie Meiergerd, West Point; and Amy Wiseman, O’Neill. The king candidates are Travis Faber, Big Springs; Nate Jameson, Venango; Josh Russo, Ainsworth; Zane Vapenik, Elsie; and Darren Wright, Albion.

There will be three speakers at Ivy Day. Dr. Patricia Cruzeiro, professor of educational administration, will be the faculty greeter. The orators representing Cardinal Key and Blue Key National Honor Societies will be Shauna Kutschara of Hay Springs and Aaron Rutt of Blue Hill, respectively. Rutt also will be the master of ceremonies.

Ivy Day is open to the public without charge.
