Christmas tunes to have jazz flavor

Published:

Some of the first Christmas tunes of the season will be presented by the Chadron State College Jazz Birds at 8 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 2 at the Olde Main Street Inn.

New arrangements on the agenda are a Latin version of "Santa Claus is Coming to Town" and swing versions of "The Christmas Song" and “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas." The latter selection is modeled from an Ella Firzgerald recording.

Also on the program will be two arrangements by the Jazz Birds’ director, Dr. Sandy Schaefer, and an array of Christmas standards such as "Boogie Woogie Santa Claus," "Merry Christmas Baby," "Santa Baby ," “Sleigh Ride” and "Cool Yule," which includes a verse about Chadron.

Mandy Carlson of Hay Springs is the Jazz Birds’ lead singer. It also is anticipated that Dr. Joel Schreuder will croon a few Frank Sinatra tunes.

No admission will be charged and the public is welcome.
