Busy semester on tap at Chadron State

Published:

The second semester, which officially begins Monday, Jan. 12 when classes resume, will be a busy one at Chadron State College. It will feature several special events along with numerous conferences and an array of concerts, theater productions and athletic events.

Two well-known speakers are scheduled for early in the semester. The first will be Leon Williams of Storm Lake, Iowa, who will speak at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan 22 on Martin Luther King’s “Shattered Dreams.” Then at 7 p.m. on Friday, Feb, 6, Colorado Gov. Bill Owens will speak as part of the Distinguished Speakers Series.

Highlighting the popular Galaxy Series schedule will be a program by the Flemenco Vivo Dancers featuring Carlota Santana at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 13. The presentation will combine the dance and music of the several cultures that has inhabited southern Spain for centuries (see separate story).

Also at CSC this spring will be the production of one of America’s best known plays, “A Streetcar Named Desire.” It will be presented by the Montana Repertory Theatre on Tuesday, Feb. 24.

A mixed media art exhibit featuring the works of David Collins, an art instructor at Alleghany College in Pennsylvania, will open on Monday, the same day as classes for the new semester begin. About a month later, the works of Sandra Williams, who teaches art at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, will open in Memorial Hall.

Sandwiched between the exhibits by the visiting artists will be an opportunity for regional artists to display their work and also have it evaluated by an expert during second annual Juried Exhibit, which will open Jan. 30 and run through Feb. 18.

In early March, Chadron State will host the American Pre-Veterinary Symposium. Up to 400 veterinary and pre-veterinary students from across the nation are expected to attend. This will be the first time the event has been in Nebraska and will be one of the few times it has been on the campus that does not have a veterinary school. An array of animal health and care issues will be explored during the symposium,
