Bodmer exhibit at Sandoz Center

An art show featuring the works of Swiss artist Karl Bodmer will open at the Mari Sandoz High Plains Heritage Center at Chadron State College on Wednesday, Feb. 4.

The show, "Travels in the Interior of North America: The Maximilian-Bodmer Exhibition," showcases 81 prints produced by Bodmer's drawings. Prince Maximilian zu Wied, an experienced scientist, and Bodmer made a two-year trek through the western wilderness in 1832 for what is regarded as one of the most important of the early exhibitions. No previous exploration of North America combined the abilities of an experienced scientist with those of a talented artist.

The engravings in the exhibition were produced from the original 19th century printing plates, which are owned by the Joslyn Art Museum in Omaha. Pulled on a hand-operated flat-bed press and then hand colored, the 20th century edition has been made in the same fashion and to the same standards as the 19th century sets.

The exhibit will run through March 6 and is open to the public free of charge. The Sandoz Center is open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday, and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturdays. It is closed from noon to 1 p.m. each day.
