All My Sons' at CSC this weekend
A modern tragedy, Arthur Miller’s “All My Sons,” will be presented in the Black Box Theatre of Memorial Hall at Chadron State College this weekend. The times are 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Friday and Saturday, Feb. 12-14 and at 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 15.
“All My Sons” received the New York Drama Critics Circle Award as the Best American Play in 1947. It has been described as a tale of love, greed and personal responsibility. One of the actresses in the production, Hannah McMaster of Chadron, said, “It really strums the heartstrings.”
The story involves the Kellers, a prosperous family shortly after World War II. One of their sons, Larry, was a pilot during the war and is missing in action. The other son, Chris, now intends to propose to Ann, who had been Larry’s girl.
Mrs. Keller (Kate) resists Chris’s plan, holding out hope that Larry is still alive. Joe Keller, whose manufacturing plant supplied made parts used in military airplanes, intervenes on Chris’s behalf, but the terrible truth about Larry and the fact that his father’s unscrupulous business practices may have contributed to Larry’s death eventually emerges.
Kyle Sasse of Gordon portrays Joe Keller and Samantha Farris of Cheyenne is cast as Kate. Adam Spencer of Grand Island plays the part of Chris while McMaster portrays Ann. Brian Shafer of Ord is cast as Ann’s brother.
The others in the play are the Kellers’ neighbors. Those parts are played by Dan Giffee of Dawson, Beth Anne Sanders of Rapid City, Elisabeth Saunders of Gillette, Heath Draney of Omaha and Leslie Biernacki of Chadron.
Much of the behind-the-scene work is being done by seniors from Chadron. Andrew Cassiday designed the set and Brian Griffith is in charge of the sound. Amy Crilly of Alliance is the costume designer.
The play is directed by Roger Mays, associate professor of theater. Scott Cavin is in charge of the lighting. Students Crystal Neitzel of Gregory, S.D., and Scott Roberts of Chadron are the stage managers.
Tickets may be obtained through the Memorial Hall box office, which is open from 2 to 5 p.m. each weekday. They are $5 for adults and $3 for senior citizens and youths 18 and under. The box office telephone number is 432-6360.
