Robert Pifer was born in White Cloud, Kan., and moved with his family to Rulo and Preston, Neb. He worked for Margrave Farms, a big feed operation of the day. He liked the Sandhill’s and decided to stay in hopes of someday owning a ranch and a lot of cattle. He married Caroline Sandoz. In time, he owned part of the Margrave ranches and others. He regretted many times that he did not have more education, so the scholarship was established at Chadron State College Foundation in his name.
