The Purple Passion Picnic (PPP) group originated in 1962 when Verne Lewellen and Bob Scott drove to Cheyenne, WY to visit with Doyle Dudney and Pete Groves about the possibility of getting the bunch of guys together who played football at Chadron State right after World War II. Although the name for the PPP has doubtful origin, the name stuck following a get together at Chadron State Park in the late forties at which time a concoction of liquid took on a purple color following a mixture of mysterious proportions. Although the original idea was to have the former football players, it soon expanded to include any athlete of the time, then athletes at any time, then members of the band, then gals who attended at the time, then the Elks' baseball team members, then anyone who ever attended Chadron State, then anyone who ever heard of Chadron, then anyone who wants to be included. Hence, a roster includes a variety of people from all walks of life and all ages.
