Inspired to become a nurse, she attended the University of Nebraska and received her RN degree. She traveled as a rural health nurse for several years before marrying and raising two daughters. During this time, she worked as head nurse in several central Nebraska hospitals. Upon finishing her bachelor's degree in nursing from the University of Nebraska, she came to CSC as the college nurse where she later received her master's in education. Mabel found she had a passion for both teaching and nursing. When Mabel retired from CSC, she returned to floor duty at several of the local hospitals. She also became more involved in community service and traveled extensively. She finally retired her nursing career at age 75 while working part time for the Pine Ridge Job Corps. One of her main ambitions was to help students enjoy the profession she so dearly loved.
