Criteria:

The recipients shall be four student-athletes each year. First preference shall be given to students from the following states: Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota, Wyoming, Oklahoma, Texas, Kansas, Arizona, Colorado, and Nevada.

Leon C. Rittenhouse was born in Lewellen, Neb., in 1912 and married Zelma D. Barnum in 1942. He received his bachelors of science degree in 1941 from CSC and his master's in education from Colorado University in 1956. Zelma acquired her bachelors of Science degree in education in 1939 from CSC. She also earned 50 semester hours from Denver University and Colorado State University from 1958-68. Leon and Zelma had three children, Donald, Bonnie and David. Mr. Rittenhouse was a principal for Lewellen Grade School. He was then the administrator and instructor in the U.S. Air Force Technical Training schools for 28 years and retired in 1974, with 33 years of service. Zelma was a public school teacher at Chadron High School for three years and a teacher and counselor in the Denver Public Schools for 16 years. She retired in 1977.
