Joan Lynn Petit Endowment

This endowment is given in loving memory of my mother, Joan Lynn Petit. Born in Billings, Montana and raised in Edgemont, south Dakota, her love of teaching began early in her life. Her small hometown had lost their second-grade teacher, so she was asked to help out her senior year in high school. Her love of children and education merged, and on her way she went.

In the 1950’s, Chadron State College was known as Chadron State Teacher’s College. Being the first in her family to go to college, she developed her skill at Chadron. After two years of studying, she earned her teaching certificate, and began teaching in 1957.

She then married and had two children both of them completed their Bachelor’s and graduate studies. She remained a fierce advocate of higher education. All of her grandchildren have gone on to become college graduates as well.
