Hubert J. Liehe was born September 7, 1907 in Cheyenne, WY as one of eight children. His earliest childhood was spent in Utah until age seven. He then lived in Alliance, NE and ultimately, Chadron. He was a 1925 graduate of Chadron High School and received his B.S. (Chemistry) from CSC in 1928. The Depression forced him to delay graduate school for three years so he taught Science at Chadron High School. He earned his M.S. in Chemistry from Nebraska University at Lincoln in 1932. Lack of funds (as he put it) forced him to drop out of the PhD program a year and half later. After again teaching for years, he accepted an offer from Standard Oil of Indiana in 1937 and moved to Whiting, IN. This was the beginning of a successful 35 year career in Research and Development at that firm. He died at the age of 96 in 20014. Hubert played tennis into his late sixties, moving to doubles when singles became too strenuous. He also loved fishing and imparted that love to most of his four children. Hubert held a number of officer positions in the Boy Scouts, Camp Fire Girls and Kiwanis organizations in Northwest Indiana, as well as over 20 years as a Meals on Wheels volunteer. He and his wife Isabelle were married 58 years and their union resulted in four children, six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
