Gene and Margaret Ann Hughes Scholarship

Criteria:

The recipient shall have a GPA of at least 2.5, with 3.0 or above preferred. He/She shall graduate from Scottsbluff High School or a transfer student from Western Nebraska Community College.


Dr. Eugene M. Hughes, was born and raised in Scottsbluff, Nebraska. Hughes earned a B.S. at Chadron State College (CSC-l956), an M.S. in Mathematics at Kansas State University (KSU-1958), and a PhD in mathematics at George Peabody College of Vanderbilt University (1968). He also has been awarded the Honorary Degree of Doctor of Humane Letters by both CSC and Northern Arizona University (NAU). Hughes career in higher education extended over 40 years and included: numerous roles at Chadron State College including Professor and Head of the Department of Mathematics, Administrative Assistant to the President and Dean, Director of Institutional Research, and Dean of Administration. Hughes is President Emeritus of both WSU and NAU. Dr. Margaret Ann Hughes retired in 1998 after a 30-year career in higher education, many of those as a `pioneer' for female university administrators.
