"I'd have given anything to have a college education but we didn't have the funds during the depression. My education was self-education," said Hermie Cilek. She believes everyone must get a college education. It is valuable and something one will always have. As a youth, Hermie was supported in her educational efforts at school and in 4-H by her parents, Herman and Bessie Vahrenkamp. Hermie taught at country schools in Sheridan County for four years in the 1930s before marrying Elmer "Bud" Cilek. As a couple they supported the legacy of education. Bud secretly gave money to the Hay Springs Public Library. She was a 4-H leader for 25 years. Together they encouraged their own children to get college degrees, and served as host parents for several Chadron Sate College students. It is Hermie and Bud's wish to continue the legacy of a college education by supporting you with this scholarship.
