Criteria:

Recipient shall be pursuing a major or minor in mathematics or math education. He/she should embrace challenges, display curiosity, and drive oneself to be the best student possible.


Dr. Monty G. Fickel guided Chadron State College's mathematics department during a period of tremendous growth, but always had time for the individual who embraced challenges, tried hard, displayed curiosity, and wanted to be the best student possible. He was at CSC for 27 years. He pioneered online instruction and offered the first course over the internet in 1997. He was raised on a farm near Belmont and graduated from Crawford High School. He obtained his doctorate in mathematics from the University of Nebraska at Lincoln in 1986. He served many years in the US Navy and earned a master's degree in mechanical engineering from the Naval Postgraduate School at Monterey, CA. He earned his bachelor's degrees in mathematics from CSC and metallurgical engineering from the University of Oklahoma.
