Jim Jacobs was raised in Fremont, NE where he participated in Track and Field. Upon graduation, he attended Midland University where his track coach was Don Holst. Don left after a year and moved to CSC. Several years later Jim married and they had a child. He had dropped out of college and worked for the railroad. He literally ran into Don on the street in Kearney. Don was not happy that Jim had quit college and resolved to remedy that. He came to Jim's house in Kearney and proposed that Jim and his wife move to Chadron. Don had secured housing, student loans, a babysitter, a work study for Jim and a job for Jim's wife at the hospital. What possible answer could there be? Jim could no longer compete, but Don's interest was his education. Jim moved to Chadron in 1968 and completed his degree in Summer 1969. Jim lost track of Don for 30 years. He went on to a successful career in business and retired in 2000. On a trip to Chadron Jim found Don living out by the State Park and felt he couldn't have had the success that he had without Don's intervention. At that point he decided to create a scholarship in Don's name so he could continue to help others in the future. This is why you were awarded this scholarship. Your job is to strive for success not only in your sport, but in life. Give back to the greater community in your life, and if you can, to CSC.
