Mr. & Mrs. Gus Benthack were highly respected, community- oriented ranchers in the Chadron area. Mr. Benthack passed away early in life so Mrs. Benthack established a scholarship as a memorial to her late husband. Mrs. Bright and her husband Charles were faculty members at CSC for many years. Mrs. Bright had very fond memories of Chadron State resulting in her leaving a place in her will to assist future CSC students. Earl Blake moved to Big Springs, NE to farm after his wife and child died in the influenza epidemic of 1918. He never remarried and became an avid farmer, hunter, trapper, and fisherman who was also very generous. He also had an intense interest in education which led him to designate funds in his will to help students pay for their education. The three scholarships joined forces in 1989.
