WHY DO SOCIAL WORK STUDENTS STUDY DIVERSITY?

All people need help and support. Social workers are prepared to work with individuals from all backgrounds and walks of life. The fourth core competency of social work, according to the Counsel on Social Work Education, is engaging in diversity and difference in practice. Social workers advocate for justice in the community that they serve. Being culturally aware is an invaluable skill that all social workers develop.    

HOW CAN A STUDENT BRING AN APPRECIATION OF DIVERSITY TO A SOCIAL SERVICES AGENCY?

  • Being diverse themselves.
  • Understanding the importance of diversity.
  • Encourage diversity in the agency.
  • Can do in-services on African American, Native American, elderly, and LGBTQ+ populations.
  • Share textbook information, class lectures, or PowerPoints. 
  • The student can be a source on how to find issues regarding diversity.
